Kalating is an independent Staffordshire leather-goods brand established in 2014, creating original leather bags and accessories designed for everyday life and made to develop character with age.Our story began with a simple ambition: to create leather goods that brought together distinctive design, enduring quality and everyday practicality.More than a decade later, that principle still guides everything we create.
What does Kalating mean?
Kalating was inspired by the family name Kalathingal and a childhood dream to create a brand of enduring quality.
What began as an idea became Kalating - a name that today represents our pursuit of creating exceptional products through craftsmanship, patience and purpose.
Original by Design
Every Kalating bag begins with our own design.
From the proportions and silhouette to the placement of handles, pockets and compartments, we develop our collections around how the products will actually be carried and used.
Our range has grown over the years to include briefcases, handbags, backpacks, wallets, washbags and leather gifts - but our approach remains the same: considered design, practical details and timeless styling rather than passing trends.
Our bags are designed in Staffordshire and made in carefully selected leathers, predominantly full-grain and top-grain leather, chosen for their durability, texture and natural character.
Leather with Character
We believe one of the most beautiful things about genuine leather is that it doesn't remain unchanged.
Natural variations in grain and texture give each piece its own character. With use, the leather softens, develops subtle changes in tone and gradually acquires a patina unique to its owner.
It means two Kalating bags may begin similar, but they won't necessarily look exactly the same years later.
We see that as part of their appeal.
Our aim is not to create something disposable or designed for a single season. We want to create pieces that become familiar companions - products that look better for having been used and carry the marks of the journeys they've been part of.
Personal by Design
A Kalating piece can also be made distinctly yours.
Our personalisation service allows selected products to be engraved with initials, text, handwriting and logos.
A set of initials can make a gift more personal. A handwritten message can preserve something meaningful in the writer's own hand. A company logo can transform a piece into a distinctive corporate gift.
It is a simple idea: take something designed to last and make it mean a little more.
From Staffordshire to Trentham
After more than a decade of building Kalating, 2026 marks a new chapter in our story with the opening of our store at Trentham Shopping Village in Staffordshire.
For us, leather has always been a material best experienced in person.
Our Trentham store gives you the opportunity to feel the different leathers, compare colours and textures, try our designs and discover the details that aren't always possible to appreciate through a screen.
It brings together our original leather collections, gifting, personalisation and corporate gifting under one roof.
